Who We Are

CFUW Grimsby, which includes Lincoln and West Lincoln, is an affiliate of the Canadian Federation of University Women, a voluntary, non-profit, self-funded non-governmental organization with close to 9000 members in over 100 Clubs across Canada.

CFUW Grimsby offers you opportunities to network, listen to speakers on current issues, become more involved in our community and make new friends.

Our Program

The Club offers several activities, such as monthly dinner meetings, a book club, a Speaker Series, an annual Shaw Festival trip, an annual lobster dinner fundraiser with a silent & live auction, an advocacy group and so much more.

Monthly Dinner Meetings

The Club meets monthly, September to May, on the 3rd Monday of the month. Our meetings are held at various local restaurants (or over Zoom during restrictions).

The business meetings are followed by a three-course dinner.  A Speaker on various local or current event topics follows dinner. See our Events page for recent and upcoming speakers.

Speaker Series

The Grimsby Club supports the Ontario Council which provides learning opportunities two to three times per year in Toronto.

These Speaker Series are held in the Spring and Fall. The Friday evening and Saturday sessions include a keynote speaker, then breakout-sessions on topics that affect women, and lunch.

These are great networking opportunities, allowing participants to meet like-minded women from across the province.

Shaw Festival Trip

Each June, we organize a mid-week trip to the Shaw Festival. This includes a behind-the-scenes session with Festival staff, a luncheon at a Niagara-on-the-Lake restaurant, and a matinee performance at the Festival Theatre.

Monthly Book Club

We also have a Book Club hosted by volunteer members (or over Zoom during restrictions). It is an optional activity that meets the first Monday evening of each month.

Advocacy

CFUW encourages its members to use their expertise to bring about change, with particular reference to women’s issues such as violence against women, early learning and child care, education, economic prosperity and the empowerment of women as leaders and decision-makers.

CFUW also works on a global level for the adoption and implementation of international agreements that will protect and benefit all women and girls.

Resolutions

The CFUW Clubs may create resolutions to be voted on at the National Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in June. Our March meeting is devoted to consideration and discussion on proposed resolutions. The Club will vote on giving its support, or declining support for the resolutions at this meeting.

The following are examples of resolutions from recent years:

  • Reducing the use of single-use plastics,

  • The right to repair for household appliances

  • Ending the Opioid crisis

  • Supporting women in the workforce post pandemic

Annual Lobster Dinner

Each February, we hold a silent and live auction during our annual lobster dinner. The proceeds from the evening fund our scholarship program for young women graduating from local publicly funded high schools and a student currently enrolled in post-secondary education from the Grimsby-Beamsville area.

Our Goals

  1. Improve the status of women and girls.

  2. Promote quality public education.

  3. Advance human rights.

  4. Promote cooperation, networking and understanding among women.

  5. Provide an opportunity for social contacts for the friendly interchange of ideas and information.

  6. Support Advocacy Actions of other local CFUW Groups, Ontario Council, National Office, as well as international actions of Graduate Women International.

Our History

The CFUW Grimsby Club has been a long-standing contributor to our local community since it was first established more than 30 years ago.

It all started when Cindy LeBrocq, a well-known reporter, moved to Grimsby from Oakville, where she had been a CFUW member. She was the spark that started our Club in Grimsby.

She was soon joined by 12 founding members and the first meeting was held at The Gable Manor, a restaurant, on November 19, 1990.

Over the years, the Club has grown and meeting locations have evolved, but the spirit has remained.

We continue gathering over dinner meetings in and around Grimsby and Lincoln each month where we socialize, have dinner, discuss CFUW business and listen to various speakers giving insightful and educational talks.

We always welcome new members and would love to have you join us
